چکیده

-An objective index, the Sludge Biotic Index (SBI), based on the microfauna associated with activated-sludge mixed liquor, has been devised to monitor activated-sludge plant performance. The proposed method makes it possible to define the biological quality of the sludge using numerical values (biotic index) of 0-10, and to group SBI values into four quality classes. The method is based on two principles. First, the dominance of the microfauna keygroups changes in relation to the environmental and operational conditions of the plant. In particular, some protozoa such as small flagellates and the ciliates Vorticella microstoma and Opercularia spp have a negative influence on the index value. Secondly, the number of morphological species is reduced as the performance of the plant gets worse. The advantage of this method over other schemes is that it provides numerical values which enable the operator to monitor the prevalent plant operating conditions on a daily basis. Key words--protozoa, activated sludge, Sludge Biotic Index, indicator species, plant performance

Comparative study of suspended and attached activated sludge processes in the treatment of wastewater containing toxic substances

Although activated sludge communities are considered stable, the presence of toxic substances, such as Cr(VI), in the influent may induce changes in the activity and the performance of a wastewater treatment plant. The main objective of this study was the determination of Cr(VI) effects on the performance and on the protistan community of an activated sludge. Six laboratory scale activated slud...

Study of the correlation between microfauna and the macrostructure of activated sludge and the efficiency of biological wastewater treatment plants.

Assessment of protozoan populations is an important tool in evaluating the efficiency of activated sludge in the treatment of wastewater. In this process, protozoa play a significant role by grazing on dispersed bacteria, supporting a healthy food web in activated sludge artificial ecosystems. The objective of this study was to verify how the success of the purification process in activated slu...

Energy Consumption Modeling in Activated Sludge Process Using Coupling PCA-ANFIS Approach

The main challenge in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) by activated sludge process is the reduction of the energy consumption that varies according to the pollutant load of influent. However, this energy is fundamentally used for aerators in a biological process. The modeling of energy consumption according to the decision parameters deemed necessary for good control of the active sludge ...

Prevalence of antibiotic resistant genes in selected activated sludge processes in Isfahan Province, Iran

Wastewater treatment plants are one of the main sources of dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) into the environment. The present study was conducted to determine the prevalence and removal of ARGs in different wastewater treatment processes. A total of 36 samples from raw and final effluent of different activated sludge processes were collected and analyzed. Molecular analysis w...
